Te Mata Estate Winery was established in Havelock North, Hawke's Bay, in 1896, but our buildings and vineyards date from the 1870s. We are one of the few wineries in New Zealand with our wine-making roots firmly in the nineteenth century, and one of the only producers who specialised in classical table wines at that time.
In 1996 the significance and viticultural heritage of this unique area were officially recognized by the Hawke’s Bay Council. The 'Te Mata Special Character Zone' was formed to commemorate the 'special ambience, wine making history and micro-climate' of the area. This certification recognized these early vineyards, and their heritage value, as New Zealand's first wine appellation. It was due to the efforts of the Chamber's family, who saw the potential in this land, that Te Mata Estate and local council were able to achieve this.
