Lagg Inaugural Batch 03 Single Malt Whisky

Charakter

For this series of inaugural bottlings, we used Concerto malted barley and water from our own borehole. The malt is peated to 50ppm in the kiln. We receive it, crush it and agitate it in our mash tun to create a cloudy wort which delivers a more oily, robust flavour. Our chosen yeast and fermentation time allows us to create the full-bodied flavour we're looking for in our distillation. We then distill twice, at nearly twice the speed of Lochranza, in our handmade copper pot stills. The spirit for this release was matured in first fill, ex-bourbon casks for 30 months and then finished for 6 months in 55L ex-Rioja red wine casks prior to release. It was bottled unchill-filtered, without the addition of any colourings and at the higher strength of 50% ABV. A rich, complex dram, full of notes of dark fruit and toasted oak.

Geschichte

Lagg Distillery is located at the southern end of the Isle of Arran and produces a range of heavily peated, modern and characterful Single Malt Whiskies. Production started in 2019, with the first recorded cut of spirit made on the 19th March of that year. This summer will see the release of three inaugural, limited release bottlings from the distillery.

Arran

Erst 1995 wurde die Arran Brennerei gegründet. Damit ist sie eine der jüngsten Whisky Brennereien in Schottland überhaupt. Als die "Britannia", das legendäre Schiff der britischen Königsfamilie, zu ihrer letzten Fahrt in See stach, machte sie auch Halt an der Isle of Arran. Queen Elisabeth II., die sich bei dieser Fahrt an Bord befand, nutze die Gelegenheit zur feierlichen Eröffnung der Isle of Arran Destillerie.
War der Start der Brennerei schon ein Erfolg, so ist es die Entwicklung der Arran Destillerie erst recht. Als eine der wenigen unabhängigen Brennereien Schottlands, hat sie es geschafft, eine interessante und vielseitige Produktpalette zu erstellen. Verschiedene Fassabfüllungen, einige Single Cask Whiskies und klassische Abfüllungen prägen das Gesicht der Brennerei.

Isle of Arran

Der Standort der neuen Brennerei in der Bucht von Lochranza ist sorgfältig ausgewählt. Dort gibt es nicht nur einen Hafen, sondern auch klares Wasser, das aus Granit entspringt und anschließend über Torf fließt. Der Whisky reift nach der Destillation in Lagerhäusern, die traditionell einen gestampften Erdboden besitzen. Dabei kommt das spezielle Mikroklima auf Arran einer schnelleren Reifung entgegen. Kühle Luft von den Bergen verbindet sich dort mit einer stetigen Warmluftzufuhr durch den Golfstrom.
